Bowel Cancer Operation

my father who is 82, underwent a successful operation to remove bowel cancer 12 months ago. he didn't need chemo or anything.now on his 12 month check hes said they will do a scan, is it normal routine
it seems to be in good health, all that remains of the Op is a painless hernia.
