Make your own natural lip balm is easier than you think. It's also better for your budget than buying commercial products - and you get the advantage of knowing exactly what you put in your mouth. Add the healing powers of aromatherapy essential oils and you have a winner!

Many commercial lip balms are made with petroleum. Petroleum products have been banned in the cosmetic use in many countries because they contain impurities that can cause cancer and other health problems.

In addition, commercial lip balms and lotions are often designed so that once the initial effect of hydration has worn off, they really dry out your skin (or lips) you must continue to apply the product (which makes you buy more - good for sales.)

On the other hand, the skin all natural vegetable based and lip products bring real, healthy hydration that will not poison you or drying your skin. You can use a variety of oils and butters to make your own lip balm, and you can even perfumes with essential oils for a little more punch (not to mention enhancing their healing powers!)

Here is a very basic recipe three ingredients lip balm to help you get started.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or sweet almond oil
  • 1 tablespoon grated beeswax (you can use a candle pure beeswax for this)
  • 1 capsule of vitamin E (400 IU)

Instructions:

  1. Put oil and wax in a heatproof cup (like a thick glass measuring cup.) Drill a hole in the capsule of vitamin E and squeeze the liquid in the oil and wax mixture.
  2. Place heatproof cup in a pan of water on the stove and heat over low heat until the wax melts. Immediately remove from heat.
  3. Pour the liquid into a small jar with screw cap or a bottle or lip balm tube. Allow to cool (it solidifies) before use.

Easy!

Then try these variations for a little jazz ...

Base Lip Balm:

  • Substitute 1 tablespoon of shea butter to 1 tablespoon of beeswax.
  • the coconut oil unrefined Use instead of olive oil.
  • Add 1 / 2 teaspoon vegetable glycerin for extra moisture.

Aromatherapy Essential Oils:

  • Add 2 drops of lavender essential oil soothe irritation.
  • 2 drops of peppermint essential oils to try for a sparkling freshness.
  • Add 2 drops of essential oil of vanilla for a delicious sweet fragrance.

A note on essential oils: Beware of oils that you use in lip balms and aromatherapy beauty products - some of them may irritate the skin (such as cinnamon and thyme.) Do your research before experimenting !
