Last Tuesday, the House Committee on Public Health has approved a bill that would require a doctor's note and the presence of a parent for customers under the age of eighteen who goes to a salon ask use a tanning bed. The sponsor of the bill, state Rep. Burt Solomons, intends to enact the strictest laws concerning the regulation of tanning for teenagers across the country. The legislation is strongly supported by physicians who warn against the dangers of ultraviolet radiation that is used in tanning beds. While teenagers do make up five percent of tanning clients, salon owners fear that this law would hurt business in an economy already struggling.
Under the legislation in force in Texas, everyone in the age of eighteen need permission from a parent. Those who are under sixteen and the desire for darker skin must have a parent present. And only young customers until the age of thirteen years now need a doctor's note.
